Minimum Trading Days: The Rule That Stops You From Finishing Early

The minimum trading days rule is easy to ignore when the profit target is close. The target is the number on the dashboard; the day count is the number in the contract. A trader can hit the target in one strong session and still wait days or weeks before the account qualifies.

The rule is also easy to misread. A "minimum trading day" may mean a day on which you placed a trade, a day with a profit above a threshold, or a day that counts toward a payout cycle. Those are different tests.

Two different clocks

A programme can use two clocks, even when the marketing presents one.

The first is the evaluation clock. It defines how many qualifying days you need before the challenge can be completed. The5ers' High Stakes programme lists three minimum profitable days in Step 1 and three in Step 2. A trader who hits the 10% target on day one does not pass on day one; the account still needs the qualifying days.

The second is the payout clock. It defines how many qualifying days you need before you can request money after funding. FTMO Futures uses four qualifying days on Growth and five on Pro, each with a daily profit threshold that rises by account size. Those are payout eligibility conditions, not a challenge-day quota.

A firm can use one clock, both clocks or neither. The label "minimum trading days" does not tell you which one you are reading.

The5ers: three profitable days

The5ers is explicit about the definition. A profitable day is a day on which closed positions made a positive profit of at least 0.5% of the initial balance. The calculation is the lower of the midnight balance or midnight equity, minus the previous day's balance.

That definition has three consequences. A flat day does not count. A day with a small loss does not count. A day with a profit below 0.5% of the initial balance does not count, even if the account is up overall.

The5ers lists three minimum profitable days for Step 1 and three for Step 2 of High Stakes. The overall trading period is unlimited, so the constraint is the count, not a calendar deadline. A trader can take as long as needed, but cannot substitute one large day for three qualifying days.

A position closed after midnight may count on the next day; check the platform's server time.

Topstep: five winning days

Topstep's payout policy uses a different definition. On the Standard path, a trader needs five winning days of at least $150 net profit. The days do not need to be consecutive. A day locks in at 4:00 PM CT, and the day on which the payout is requested does not count toward the next five.

The Consistency path uses three days and a 40% consistency target. The split remains 90/10, but the count and consistency test differ; it is not a shorter version of the same sequence.

Topstep's policy is a payout rule on top of the funded account: a trader can pass the Combine and still need the winning-day count before the first payout.

FTMO Futures: qualifying days at payout

FTMO Futures uses the language of "qualifying days" in its payout section. The Growth examples require four qualifying days, each meeting a minimum daily profit threshold. The thresholds rise with account size: $150, $250 or $300 per qualifying day. The Pro examples require five days at $200, $300 or $500.

The days are reviewed at the end of the trading day. A day that closes below the threshold does not count, even if intraday profit was higher. The rule is about closed, end-of-day results, not the best moment on the screen.

That structure is a useful reminder: a qualifying day is not the same as a green day. A trader can finish the session up $100, feel successful and still have no qualifying day if the threshold is $150. The dashboard may show a profit; the payout count may show zero.

What counts as a day?

Before you count anything, define the day.

Calendar day or trading day? A trading day may exclude weekends, holidays or the exchange's maintenance window. A calendar-day count can include days on which the market was closed. The contract should say which one it uses.

Activity or profit? Some rules count any day with a trade. Others require a minimum profit. A day with a break-even trade may satisy an activity rule and fail a profitable-day rule.

Closed or open? A qualifying day is usually based on closed profit at the end of the day. An open winner can disappear before the close. If the rule uses equity, the result may be different again

Which time zone? A day that ends at midnight in one jurisdiction can end in the middle of your session in another. Topstep's 4:00 PM CT lock is an example of a boundary that is not midnight. Put the boundary in your local calendar.

Why the rule exists

A minimum-day rule acts as a sampling requirement: the firm sees more than one observation. A trader who makes the whole target in one session gives it one data point. A trader who makes the same profit over several sessions gives it a series.

That does not make every rule fair for every strategy. A swing trader and a scalper produce different daily distributions; check the fit before paying, not after the target is hit.

Do not trade to the threshold

The dangerous version of this rule is the trader who"G&W2FVf7GW&RVƖgrFbFRF&W6B2CSBFR66VB2CCWV"FR66RFRG&FW"FG26RF&V6FRV&W"FB2BG&FrFV66B2'VRG&fVv&RVƖgrFF&W6B2f"BF&vWBbW"&VFvRFW2B&GV6RFRF&W6BgFVVVvFR&GV7B&RF&vRF6"&ǒF6VBFW"7GRf&6rFR6VB6GW&vBWFBF&B&6&fRFR&WGFW"&62FFRvVV&VBFR6VBbRVVBffRVƖgrF2FBVfRFVVFFR7BGv6W762bRVVBF&VRFB77VRFRf'7BF&VRvVƖg'VB'VffW"b6W762B'W'7BbG&FW2ƃ#vBF6&Vf&RR'W#Ɠ2FR6VBWfVF'VRWB'VR"&FƓƓFW2FVVBG&FR&fB"֖V&fCƓƓvB2FR֖VFǒ&fBB2BfVB"66VB'66VB6SƓƓ2&fBV7W&VB66VB&6RWVG"FRvW"bFRGvƓƓvBFRFW2FRG&FrFVBגFRSƓƓFvVVVG2ƖF2"֗76VB6W762'&VFR6VCƓƓFW2WB"&W6WB&W7F'BFR6VCƓbFR7vW"FbF6R2V6V"FBFVFR66VBFRVFƖRF&vWBFRF6VB6&RFRFffW&V6R&WGvVVf6rvVVBf6rFƃ#FRf6ƖR2FR6VC#&fBF&vWBFV2RrV6FR֖VF'VRFV2RrrFR66VBVVG2RF7FFRGv&RBFW&6vV&RBVFW"2F&VBFR66&Vf&RR&VBFRF&vWBbFR6VBFW2BfBW"66VGVRFR&GV7BFW2BfBW"VG&FrgWGW&W2BWfW&vVB&GV7G26'&W27V'7FF&6b72&f&66VG2&R6VFVBG&Fr&w&W2B'&W&vR66VG2"fW7FVG2BfVW2&RBFW6G2F2'F6R2&W6V&6Bf6Gf6RfW&gFR7W'&VBFW&2&Vf&R'WrV7G&sF667W&S7G&sffƖFR"&VfW'&Ɩ2W6F2FWVFVB&W6V&6F2'F6R2VGV6FBBf6Gf6RW6F&W6V&6W2G&FrFf&2&f&&6rB&WB7G'V7GW&RvRV&Ɨ6FRfVRF&W2B6G&7B6W6W2FB&WFrvW2FVBF'W'&VB&RB&Vc&GG3wwrW6F6#W6F67G&s6W&6W37G&sVƓ&Vc&GG3FSVW'26v7FW2#FSVW'2v7FW3ƓƓ&Vc&GG3VF7FW6V'F6W2#C#32F7FWWBƖ7#F7FWWBƖ7ƓƓ&Vc&GG3gF6VgWGW&W2G&Fr&V7FfW2B'VW2#eDgWGW&W2G&Fr&V7FfW2B'VW3ƓV
